UFC 85 Thoughts

Posted by SFG on June 13, 2008

Quick thoughts about this one. Jason Lambert needs to take a kickboxing class on how to act when fists are flying. Head up, chin out and hands swinging from your hips is not it. Tough break Jason! I am guessing he has one more opportunity to show he is not just a highlight reel.  I think Brandon Vera got a raw deal from quick stoppage. Granted you can’t lay on your back and take punches but in his defense there was only seconds to go in the round and he was not hurt. I agree with him that they should have “let him take a beating and move on to the next round.” I dont think Nate Marquardt got a raw deal. Sure the elbow to the back of the head was a bad call but the knee to the side of the head and the now famous head spike Piledriver more than made up for the wrong point deduction. Mike Swick looked great in this fight at 170. Much better than his last effort. I reall thought Marcus Davis would offer more challenges to him.  Michael Bisping also looked better this time around. i think the 185 lb class is just right for him and I think he will do well there. Just not well enough to challenge Anderson Silva. Lastly the fight between Matt Hughes and Thiago Alves showed a few things. Matt Hughes has been outpaced by the sport. He no doubt will fight Matt Serra and I think he will beat him but not like he would have 5 years ago. Alves on the other hand showed some real skills. Hopefully he gets his weight issues under control and becomes a top contender. I would like to see him against Josh Koscheck or Diego Sanchez next. That would tidy up the division a bit.  All in all a good night of fights, not great but solid.
