UFC 84 Thoughts

Posted by SFG on June 13, 2008

UFC 84 - Lyoto Machida did exactly what I expected to Tito Ortiz and I am convinced that while he has all the tools to win fights and a very marketable story he will never quite hit superstar status unless he mixes it up more. This is NOT the future of the sport and promoters and fans alike will make that clear. We do not want to see decisions unless the fight is like a Faber vs Pulver, Couture vs Tim Silvia or Chuck Liddell vs Wanderlei Silva. Speaking of Wandy …. It is GREAT to see him back on track!!!! Keith Jardine was fodder for his return and that is how it should be!! Long live The Axe Murderer!! I expected the outcome of the Sherk vs Penn fight but not like that. I can understand why Sean Sherk might not want to go to the ground with BJ Penn (who would?) but really that was the only place he was going to win. He made his call and I respect it I just don’t agree with that game plan but I guess he knows more about what it takes to be a champion than I do. BJ Penn has some great fights coming up if stays in the 155lbs division. I would love to see him fight Roger Huerta or Kenny Florian but it seems that he really has his sights set on a rematch with Georges St Pierre. Lets hope that match is put off for a while. GSP and Penn have some worked to do before they meet again.
